Luz Fernandez (Luzviminda Arafiles Fernandez Gaspar) is a radio talent and radio drama director, and television and movie actor. She was born in Manila on 13 July 1935. She is the fourth of eight children of Antonio Fernandez and Gabriela Arafiles. She married Leoncio Gaspar with whom she has three children. She attended Victorino Mapa High School in Manila.

 

Fernandez won second place in a DZFM-sponsored drama contest while she was a high school sophomore. Then, at age 16 in 1951, she began bit parts in several radio dramas, including the role of a mother in the soap Imelda on DZBB. A year later producer Ben Pangan picked her as Rosa Mia’s replacement in the DZRH drama Gulong ng Palad (Wheel of Fate), followed by assignments in numerous programs such as Camay Theatre of the Air and Kahapon Lamang (Only Yesterday). She was often cast as the villainess in radio soaps, including Flordeluna and Sagrado (Sacred). Her other radio programs in DZRH are Ukay-Ukay ni Manang Kikay (Sister Kikay’s Thrift Shop), Sa Kanyang Panahon (In His Time), and May Pangako ang Bukas (The Promise of Tomorrow). Fernandez also directs the program Mr. Romantiko (Mr. Romantic), the second longest running drama of the station.

She crossed over to television in the late 1950s appearing in such programs as Dr. Eduardo Roman, MD and Gabi ng Lagim (Night of Terror). She played Lola Torya, the grandmother-narrator of the fantasy anthology Ora Engkantanda (Enchanted Hour) aired on IBC 13 in the 1970s. In 1987 she was cast as the evil queen Luka in IBC 13’s Okay Ka, Fairy Ko! (You’re Okay, My Fairy!). She appeared in numerous TV dramas on ABS-CBN, including the primetime drama series Forevermore as well as in various episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya (Will You Remember) and Komiks (Comics). On GMA, she was a grieving grandmother in I Heart You Pare (I Love You Dude) and Gawas in Amaya, 2011; Madam Concha in My Beloved, 2012; and Belenita Fuentebella in Innamorata, 2014. She also appeared in several episodes of the drama anthology Magpakailanman (Forever), 2014-15.

Fernandez also starred in several movies, including Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo (Once There was a Moth), 1976; Ang Pagbabalik ni Leon Guerrero (The Return of Leon Guerrerro), 1980; Sinasamba Kita (I Worship You) and Mga Uod at Rosas (Of Worms and Roses), 1982; Feng Shui, 2004; and Ang Darling Kong Aswang (My Darling Ghost), 2009. On stage she played Lola Basyang in Ballet Manila ’s Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang (Three Stories from Grandmother Basyang), 2008, and Tatlo Pang Kuwento ni Lola Basyang (Three More Stories from Grandmother Basyang), 2013.
