First Continental Congress is Convened

1774 – First Continental Congress is Convened

From September 5 to October 26, 1774, a group of representatives from various colonies met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to address the growing tension between the colonies and Britain. It was hoped that the Congress could negotiate a peaceful settlement with the British that would allow the colonies to continue as they had in the past—as British citizens but with their daily governance left to themselves. Many believed that the Congress would be able to persuade the British to revoke the Coercive Acts in Massachusetts and that trade relations with Britain could return to normal. However, the Congress was unable to reverse British policy, and so the Congress disbanded, after setting forth an agreement for a meeting of a Second Continental Congress, whose function it would be to oversee continued efforts at peace while simultaneously preparing for what seemed an inevitable conflict with the British.
